Merlin Club: The Darkest Hour or The One Bron Phones in for Reasons Listed Below

Okay, my loves, here's the deal, the last two weeks have kind of blown with family and work drama - much of it good, some of it less than good, and in the last five days, there have been two oral surgeries in this house - two kids and 8 impacted wisdom teeth. And now? I'm getting sick. My throat is swollen, and I'm pretty sure I'm running a temp, so this post is going to be so, so short.

This was another two-parter. It's a year later, Arthur is ruling by proxy since Uther is a shell of the man he once was and basically sits in his jammies, stares out his window and refuses to eat. Arthur's got his Uncle Agravaine there to help, but he's super sleezy.

Morgana is nowhere to be found (until of course Sir Leon and some other knights find her) and she kills two of the four of them by throwing them around with her magic. She's heading to the Isle of the Blessed with Morgause so she can sacrifice her sister and the entirety of Camelot can be killed off by Dementors. (called something else, but fever brain cannot remember)

Arthur, Merlin and the knights head out to stop the Dementors, but the only way to stop them is another blood sacrifice. Arthur plans to sacrifice himself for the kingdom and Merlin plans to sacrifice himself for Arthur, but Lancelot beats them both to it and sacrifices himself for Gwen because he promised Gwen that he'd protect Arthur with his life.

Oh yeah, Uncle Sleezewad is totally evil and in cahoots with Morgana.

I'm bummed that I feel like ass, because I actually like a lot of stuff that goes on in these episodes, but blergh. Okay, so the questions.

1. If I’d written this episode...There would be better explanations for shit. Where have Morgana and Morgause been for the past year? Why is Agravaine all Team Morgana?

2. The thing I loved/hated most about this episode.

Loved: There are a ton of things I loved about this episode. I loved that Arthur was willing to sacrifice himself for his people and that Merlin was ready to sacrifice himself for Arthur and he almost did. I also loved how worried Arthur was about Merlin surviving.

Hated: I can't stand Agravaine. He's the douchiest douche who ever douched, and I don't think his reasons for wanting Morgana on the throne are ever adequately explained.

3. Something you’ve never noticed about this episode before. How Gwaine is basically Winnie the Pooh eating honey from a tree and getting attacked by bees.

4. Favorite Costume. Going with the Cailleach. Nothing says evil like cheesecloth that's been dyed black. But whatevs, it works.

5. Here is proof of some random head canon I’ve created. Not mine, but there are definitely some Merthury moments in this one.

6. What Merthur moment did Jess have the naughtiest thoughts about? I think she had all the feels when Merlin and Arthur were having their heart to heart talk before Merlin jumped up to protect Arthur from the Dementor.

7. What made Jen lose her shit (in a good or bad way) in a bad way? The way magic is just not as scary and all powerful as it was in the last three seasons.

Jess' take on the episode is here, and Jen's is here.

Merlin Club: The Coming of Arthur or Why Isn't Uther Dead Yet!?

The episode opens with Arthur finding a bunch of slaughtered knights – including Sir Leon. Upset, he reports it to his father. But Sir Leon isn’t dead. He’s only mostly dead. A group of druids find him and carry him back to their cave (the same cave in every other episode because CAVE) where they have a quick little ritual and completely heal him using the Cup of Life.

Leon returns to Camelot and tells the tale of his miraculous recovery.  Uther immediately suspects magic and gets surly. Gaius confirms that it was most likely The Cup of Life that healed Leon, and Uther gets a bad case of grabby hands. He sends Arthur on a dangerous mission to steal the cup from the druids because the druids’ cave is in Cenred’s lands and if Cenred gets his hands on the cup, it’s all over for our heroes.  Morgana smirkingly overhears the plans and shares them with Morgause who orders Cenred to have his men steal the cup from Arthur.

Arthur and Merlin set off on the dangerous mission (even though Arthur won’t tell Merlin where they’re going) and they end up getting caught by slavers and run into Gwaine in the holding pit. Arthur protects Merlin when Merlin is ordered to fight the head slaver’s champion and is ordered to fight the champion who happens to be Gwaine. Arthur and Gwaine battle, trying to make it look real and Merlin manages to create a diversion with fire and they escape.

Meanwhile back at Camelot, Uther worries over Arthur’s safety, but Morgana flirts and cajoles and flirts some more and convinces Uther that everything is peachy. Uther flirts back and it’s all super gross.
They find the druid cave and Arthur threatens a young boy at sword point (not cool, Arthur) offering to exchange the kid for the cup. The druids are all very hippie-like and “Whatevs, man. All you had to do was ask for the cup.” So they do the exchange and the head hippie tells Merlin in his mind that now he’s in charge of keeping the cup safe.
Predictably, Cenred’s men attack and shoot Arthur with a poisoned arrow and Merlin, while trying to get the cup back, drops it into the hands of one of Cenred’s soldiers. You know what would be a really good idea here, Merlin? Magic. You know, maybe just levitate that cup right back up to you? Arthur’s already out cold and Gwaine wouldn’t say shit. But, no. You just let Cenred’s men take it on back to him. It’s cool.
Once Morgause has the cup, she creates a ginormous, immortal army using blood from each man present, and they head to Camelot. And she proves their loyalty by having one of them off Cenred. Meanwhile, Arthur is sick and feverish from the poison and as soon as Gwaine’s back is turned, Merlin uses a spell to heal Arthur. When Arthur eventually wakes, they head back to Camelot to find it burning. They find Gwen’s brother, Elian, and they all sneak into the castle.

Merlin and Arthur make it to the gallery of the throne room as Uther is forced to kneel before Morgana who’s being crowned Queen of Camelot and Morgana makes sure Uther knows that she knows that she’s his daughter. Uther looks broken, but poor Arthur, he looks absolutely crushed. Even though he didn’t always agree with his father, he still idolized him. No longer. But I digress.

They go to find Gaius. Merlin packs all of his shit including the bottle of the water from the Lake of Avalon that the Fisher King gave him and they meet up with Gwaine and Elian and get the fuck out of Camelot. They hole up in the same (from the looks of it) cave the druids were using, and Merlin sends a message to Lancelot, begging him to come help.

That night, Merlin tries to use the water from Avalon for guidance, but nothing is working, and he falls asleep. He startles awake when Gwaine has to pee and the bottle breaks. He panics thinking all is lost, but the water flows into a natural rock basin and he sees Freya. She’s speaking to him from beyond and tells him he needs Excalibur, so he sneaks out, calls the dragon and they ride to the Lake of Avalon where he hid the sword the last time. Freya’s arm rises up out of the water and she returns the sword to him. The Dragon warns him to put the sword somewhere it can't be used by anyone when he's done with it.

Meanwhile, Morgana is busy taunting Uther and tantruming because the knights of Camelot won’t yield and without their allegiance, neither will the people.  She brings the knights into the courtyard and asks for their loyalty again, and when they don’t comply, she has Cenred’s soldiers fire crossbow bolts at the townspeople.

Gwen, who’s still Morgana’s handmaid, offers to talk to Sir Leon, explaining that they knew each other as children and perhaps she can talk some sense into him. She tells him she’s going to help him escape. Morgana and Morgause are listening through the grate above Leon’s cell and know what’s up.

Morgana gives Gwen some wine that has a magic powder in it and Gwen sneaks into Morgause’s room and presses the dungeon key into a piece of bread and melts metal and pours it into the bread mold to make a key. Because she’s fucking resourceful, our Gwen.

She sneaks Leon the key, and he busts out meeting her at her home in the village. She insists that he dress in drag to escape and they head off into the woods searching for Arthur. Morgause is able to track them, because that magic powder Gwen drank was magic GPS powder. Which is pretty freaking handy.
She’s briefly reunited with Arthur right before Lancelot and his buddy Percival arrive. Percival has no sleeves on his chainmail. This makes me insane.  (In a bad way.) Soon after everyone says hello, they’re set upon by Morgause’s men. A fight ensues and Merlin magics some boulders down a cliff separating them from their pursuers.

They take refuge in some ruins and find the Round Table. Arthur has them sit around it and includes Gwen and Merlin which is spectacularly progressive of him. And then he knights Lancelot, Elian, Gwaine and Percival. They all sneak back to Camelot with a plan. But they leave Gwen and Gaius behind.

Merlin knows he needs to dump the blood from the Cup of Life to break the spell and kill the immortal army. He and Lancelot (under the guise of making the bell unusable so the enemy can’t communicate)go off in search of the cup while Arthur and the rest go to free the rest of the knights. Merlin discovers that Excalibur, does in fact, kill the undead.

Meanwhile, Arthur and the rest of the knights are fighting without any sort of magical aid and it’s not looking good for our heroes. Uther is practically catatonic and wouldn’t realize there was a fight if it was going on in his cell. It was going on in his cell.

Merlin and Lancelot continue to fight their way to the cup. They’re almost there when Morgause busts in and throws them against the wall. She’s about to kills them when Gaius shows up all wild eyed and crazy and busts some moves on Morgause throwing her against a pillar and rendering her unconscious. Merlin picks up Excalibur and tips over the cup over, splashing the blood everywhere and all the knights explode and disappear.

Morgana finds Morgause and screams and screams and screams like a freaking banshee. She screams so hard that that section of the castle collapses. Later, Uther’s still way out of it, but order has been restored to Camelot and no traces of Morgana or Morgause have been found. Merlin sneaks out to put the sword in the stone

Okay...now for the questions.
1. If I’d written this episode...I know you guys are probably sick of hearing me say it, but holy fuck, the incest vibes have got to stop. None of this is okay, people. I don't understand what the writers were thinking.
2. The thing I loved/hated most about this episode.
Loved: There are a ton of things I loved about this episode. The Arthur/Merlin banter, Arthur protecting Merlin from hand to hand combat, GWAINE!, Morgause finally offing Cenred, LANCELOT!, Arthur including Gwen and Merlin at the Round Table, poor, broken Uther - what!? I have issues. Arthur knighting the non-noble knights, Merlin seeing Freya in the water, Freya raising Excalibur from the bottom of the Lake of Avalon, Merlin driving Excalibur into the stone and my personal  favorite, "No. Don't really fancy it." I laugh every time I hear Merlin say this - particularly after this moving scene. It's short. Watch it.

Hated: Besides the incest awfulness, Arthur's heartbreak at Morgana's betrayal and the realization that his lied to him and wasn't the man he'd believed him to be is just crushing. Bradley James played it so well.

3. Something you’ve never noticed about this episode before. How Merlin didn't even bother to try to use magic to save the Cup of Life. And how sad Lancelot looks when he realizes there's no hope for him and Gwen.

4. Favorite Costume. Gwaine.

5. Here is Proof of some random head canon I’ve created. I didn't create it, but something is seriously NOT RIGHT between Uther and Morgana.

6. What Merthur moment did Jess have the naughtiest thoughts about? I think she had tender feels when Arthur steps up to protect Merlin from having to fight the slaver's champion, and also Arthur giving Merlin a seat at the Round Table - even though a portion of that scene was foolishly deleted.

7. What made Jen lose her shit (in a good or bad way) in a bad way? The grossness between Uther and Morgana and also  poor, broken Uther.

Jess' take on the episode is here, and Jen's is here.

Merlin Club: The Sorcerer's Shadow or The One Where There's Yet Another Fucking Tournament. Seriously, Camelot!? What the Hell with the Tournaments!?

Ohhhhhh, for the love of god...do the tournaments in Camelot never end?  Seriously...her a tournament, there a tournament, everywhere a tournament.  Sorry...I got carried away. This may already be obvious, but this isn't one of my favorite episodes.

Any way, the show opens with Dudley Dursley - okay, fine, Gilli (but he'll always be Dudley to me) is walking to Camelot with a sword strapped to his back. Two thugs, who just happen to be hanging out in the woods...like you do, taunt him and steal his sword.Angry and frustrated, Dudley continues on to Camelot anyway. Because there's a tournament. Again. Another. Fucking. Tournament.

But anyway, it's a no holds barred tournament, anyone can compete, no rules, blah blah medieval big time wrestling blah.

Morgana (knowing full well Uther is her father) flirts shamelessly with him and goads him into competing and honestly the whole conversation seems like one big euphamism for sex - sort of a a, well...if you can't get it up...kinda thing.  And Uther, (knowing full well Morgana is his daughter) flirts back and allows himself to be goaded. It's super gross. But, you know, Morgana is hoping Uther will die in combat because he can't get it up anymore.

So now, the King and Prince of Camelot are competing and so is Dudley Dursley. What could possibly go wrong?

The thugs who stole Dudley's sword are being aggressive toward Merlin and Dudley rescues him - using magic - oooooooooooooooooooooooohhhhhh. Merlin of course goes to tell Gaius all about it. Later after some ill timed magical healing, Dudders loses his magical ring as he's running away and hiding from Camelot's guard. Gaius finds the ring and pockets it before Uther sees it while investigating the suspected magic use.

Uther also cleverly decides that the scorched wood that he sees is proof positive that magic has been used. There you have it folks, charred wood is indicative of magic. So should you see charred wood anywhere in your travels, know that magic has indeed been used and persecute accordingly.

Anyway, Merlin returns the ring to Dudley and warns him to be careful. Dudley just whines about how he wants respect and he's not gonna be a wuss like his father was - the person he inherited the magic ring from.

Episode trudges endlessly on with battle after battle. No...I mean endlessly. Dudley wins every match using magic, progresses up the ranks until he has the respect and adoration he's always dreamed of. He even ends up killing one of the thugs. He's getting totally out of control and decides that he's going to go up against Uther and strike a blow for magic users everywhere.

Aaaaaaand he can do this because when Arthur fought Uther, he threw the fight so as not to embarrass the king. And Uther, per usual, is a total dick about it.

Long story short, Dudley almost has Uther, he's ready to kill him, but Merlin gives Uther a little magical assistance because if Uther dies at the hands of a magic user, Arthur will never allow magic back into Camelot when he's king - so says the dragon that Merlin called with his Dragon Lord voice that drop Jess' panties in 1.5 seconds.

So Uther beats Dudley and lets him live. Morgana is frustrated and furious that neither her father nor brother died. (Thwarted again!) And Uther confesses that he knows that Arthur threw the fight and *that's* the sign to Uther that Arthur will make a super awesome king. Oh, and Merlin has one last heart to heart with Dudders before he leaves Camelot for good.

Okay...now for the questions.

1. If I’d written this episode...I would have made would have had Morgana coerce Uther into fighting using some method that didn't involve overt flirting with her FATHER.

2. The thing I loved/hated most about this episode.

Loved: Honestly, I can't think of anything I genuinely loved about this episode. Okay, that's a lie. I did rather enjoy watching Arthur and Uther go at it in the tournament field.

Hated: It's possible that you might have missed this is the recap...and the answer to question one - after all, I was rather subtle. But...it's the nasty,  flirty, incestuous vibe between Morgana and Uther . Also hated another tournament plot.

3. Something you’ve never noticed about this episode before. How Gwen was entirely absent.

4. Favorite Costume. Uther...in armor.

5. Here is Proof of some random head canon I’ve created. I didn't create it, but something is seriously NOT RIGHT between Uther and Morgana.

6. What Merthur moment did Jess have the naughtiest thoughts about? She likes the way Merlin watches Arthur battle. She also likes the way Merlin dresses Arthur for battle. She knows that Merlin gets hot and is grateful for his baggy peasant clothes.

7. What made Jen lose her shit (in a good or bad way) in a bad way? Here...let me show you...

Jess' take on the episode is here, and Jen's is here.

Merlin Club: The Queen of Hearts or The One Where Uther Continues to Be an Insufferable Douchebag

I'm so sorry guys - this is going to be a super short post because it's late, and I'm trying to outrun a migraine.

Blergh.

But this weeks episode is fueled by paranoia and douchebaggary.

Morgana flips shit because she has a dream about Arthur crowning Gwen queen. Morgana cries to Morgause and Morgause tells her it was a true dream and to fix this crap.

Morgana decides to play evil matchmaker between Arthur and Gwen - encouraging them to get together. So Arthur invites Gwen on a romantic picnic and Gwen agrees once Merlin convinces her that it's a great idea.

And this happens.

And also this.
Unfortunately, before anyone can have too much fun, Morgana convinces Uther that they haven't spent nearly enough time together and wheedles until he agrees to go for a ride.

So this happens, too.

And also, this bit of awkwardness.
Back at Camelot, Arthur thinks that Uther is going to ream him out for kissing Gwen, but Uther congratulates him instead. He thinks that Arthur is getting laid by the staff and is all kinds of proud, because that's the kind of douchebag he is. I'm paraphrasing, but it's basically, "Good job getting that servant ass, son! Servants exist to make our lives easier and our dicks happy." Then he tells Arthur to end it with Gwen. Arthur isn't having it and tells his father that he's in love with Gwen.

Morgana later suggests to Uther that Arthur must be enchanted to have fallen in love with a serving girl. Uther sees the inherent wisdom in this, and with cries of, "Sorcery!" has Arthur's room searched where the knights find a suspicious poultice.

Uther asks Gaius if the little hex bag looks magical and if it could be used to enchant someone. Cand Gaius, dumbass that he is, says yes, knowing what's at stake. Gwen is accused of sorcery and thrown into the dungeon to be burned at the stake the next morning.

Merlin comes up with the plan of providing another sorcerer on which the blame can fall, thus clearing Gwen. So he uses a spell to age himself - becoming Dragoon.

So he makes his presence known in Camelot and unfortunately, can't reverse the spell on his own and gets caught. He admits to enchanting Arthur and he's now sentenced to burn in the morning. Meanwhile, Arthur is looking for Merlin and Gaius helpfully tells Arthur that Merlin is in the tavern.

Gaius uses his magical chemistry skills and stays up all night creating an antidote. As Dragoon is being led to the stake, Gaius motions that he's got the antidote, so Merlin creates a diversion by yelling at Uther and then escaping his guards, grabbing the potion from Gaius and distracting the crowd by using magic to make the stake and all the wood erupt in a huge fireball.

He escapes into the castle, drinks the potion and turns back into himself right before Arthur finds him and demands to know where the sorcerer went and why Merlin was at the tavern. There's also a threat of punishment before Arthur tries to track down Dragoon.

Later we see Arthur pull Gwen into an alcove and promise that they'll be together someday and we see Merlin covered with horseshit from his punishment of mucking out the stables.

Okay...now for the questions.
1. If I’d written this episode...I would have made Gwen and Arthur question the whole Dragoon situation a little more carefully. I mean, they both knew they weren't enchanted and he basically ended up saving Gwen, wouldn't they wonder about that at least a little?
2. The thing I loved/hated most about this episode. Loved: This right here.

Hated: Uther's callous assumption that the servants exist to be banged.

3. Something you’ve never noticed about this episode before. How creepy the vibe is between Morgana and Uther when she's begging him to go riding with her. It's this weird little girlish begging and he's sort of indulging her like he would a mistress. It just sat wrong with me.

4. Favorite Costume. Dragoon, of course.

5. Here is Proof of some random head canon I’ve created. I didn't create it, but Merlin and Arthur's true love. Arthur thinks Dragoon's eyes look familiar, so some part of him recognizes Merlin.

6. What Merthur moment did Jess have the naughtiest thoughts about? See above, though that's sweet and not naughty. And I'm sure she had an entirely different punishment in mind for Arthur to mete out to Merlin. Something that involves spanking, I'm sure.
7. What made Jen lose her shit (in a good or bad way) in a bad way?  The fact that Gaius was all, "Yep, sire. Looks magical to me." when Gwen's life was on the line.
Jess' take on the episode is here, and Jen's is here.
