A Few of My Favorite Things: TV Shows

Oooooohhhh, it’s time for another installments of Favorite Things.

And this month, it’s TV shows.

Shiny!

These are in no particular order, because for the most part, I can’t decide.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer – I know some people like the movie rather than the show, but I freaking love the show. The movie was only okay for me.  I know that it’s problematic in terms of some of the themes, but I love it anyway. The characters and (most of) their arcs, the dialogue…it will always be high on my list of faves.

Game of Thrones – I haven’t read the books, (someday) but I do enjoy the show. First off, Peter Dinklage. What’s not to love? Secondly, costume porn. OMG, the most amazing costume porn. Thirdly, this is kind of a train wreck love for me because holy hell, WTF is going to happen next!? ( I know…if I’d read the books, I’d know. But whatevs.)

Supernatural – This is going to be a fairly unpopular opinion, but I as much as I love me some Sam and Dean, I wonder if perhaps the show has gone on a little too long. I worry that plot-wise, it’s rolling downhill, and we’re constantly revisiting themes we’ve already dealt with. But, that said, I do still enjoy it and I *love* when Felicia Day guest stars. LOVE. IT.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine – Of all the Star Treks, and despite my deep and abiding love for Patrick Stewart, DS9 is my fav. I love the politics and the characters. The writing on that show was universally excellent.
Firefly – oh, Firefly…I loved you so. You should have lasted longer. Stupid network. Yeah, I know we got Serenity, and that’s awesome, except for the parts that weren’t! But I still love Firefly - characters and dialogue in particular.
Doctor Who – I haven’t had a chance to watch the original ones, but I love the reboot. Ten is my Doctor, in case anyone is wondering. However, I’m not happy with some of the more recent plotlines and character issues. I’m hoping that these things will shake themselves out.
Sherlock – Dear lord, I love Benedict Cumberbatch, despite the fact that some people *coughJennyTroutcough*say he looks like a lizard in a man suit. Whatever, Trout. I heart him. And his hands. And his voice. And I thoroughly enjoy the show.
Hannibal – Hoooookay. Hugh Dancy and Mads Mikkelsen in the same show. Be still my beating heart. I’m not gonna lie – I’m here for the unbelievable tension between these two. And in spite of the gore (and the fucked up crap they pulled with Alana Bloom last season) this show is a thing of beauty.
Merlin – I can’t believe I almost forgot to add Merlin! What is the matter with me!? Okay, A.) Arthurian lore. I’m all over that. B.) Colin Morgan, Bradley James, Anthony Stewart head and Katie McGrath. I’m all over that, too. Yes, there are some issues with the show, but I love it, anyway. Also? Costume porn.
Covington Cross – Maybe this is just nostalgia talking, but I loved that show. I loved it so hard. The most velour of all velour Middle Ages, plus Nigel Terry. Perfection.
The Animaniacs – I will never tire of The Animaniacs. Never. Yakko, Wakko and Dot, Pinky and the Brain, Slappy the Squirrel, The Wheel of Morality, The Good Feathers, Buttons and Mindy, the songs – oh, the glorious songs. Someday, I’ll get it all on DVD, and I will be thrilled.

How to recognize when your sister's been watching too much Supernatural.

To explain how I know Cait's been watching too much Supernatural, I have to share some back story. On my way out to pick up the kids from school on Tuesday, my faithful car, Squishy, started shuddering and shaking. It just kept getting worse and worse. So I drove it to the auto repair shop to discover that the idiot (at a different shop) who'd last rotated my tires didn't bother to tighten the lug nuts on my right front tire. Apparently, I was another half mile away from having my tire fly off on the expressway.

So when I got home, I texted my sister to bitch about it...like you do (like I do, anyway).

This is conversation that took place.

THIS is how I know she's been watching an inordinate amount of Supernatural, lately.

But I'm okay with that.

It's Dean Day!

What's Dean Day? I'm so glad you asked. Well, Janna, and Pixie decided that Valentine's Day is now known as Dean Day, where all us Dean Girls get together and list ten things we love about Dean.

Now, for those of you who aren't familiar with the wonder that is Dean, lemme fill you in. Last April, when Brynn went away to RT and I stayed home, she very cleverly got me hooked on a show called Supernatural. She doled out discs to me like they were crack, and like a good little junkie, I wrote the prerequisite number of pages, got my Supernatural fix and went back to Brynn for a new disc. I crammed four seasons of Supernatural into four months and managed to write two and a half books while I was doing it. Dean is very good motivation. Hell, who am I kidding...so is Sam.

In a nutshell, Sam and Dean travel the US hunting ghosts, demons and a host of other Supernatural/urban legends. There's a series long plot line about their family, good vs. evil, belonging...okay, I could go on, but I won't. On to Dean Day! (And yes, for those of you who didn't already know, I'm a giant nerd.)

Other Dean Day participants are Janna, Pixiedust, Veronica, Savory Tv, ggs_closet, Sayuri, JoJo, Eliza Gayle, Donna Grant, Leontine, Stacy, Sagi, Fallon Blake and Bellie7.

My Dean's Day list - in no particular order.

1.) Those eyes. Seriously - they're all bedroom-y and full of painful secrets. Yeah, it's that whole Dean-went-to-Hell wounded hero thing. Who doesn't love that? Also, they're green - my favorite color.

2.) Devotion to family - particularly Sam. Gotta love a guy who will do anything to protect the people he loves. And sometimes love means locking people up in a demon proof detox room.

3.) Those lips. Those kissable, bite-able lips. Le sigh...

4.) Love me some bad boy-ness. Never underestimate a guy that knows his way around weapons, rock salt, dead man's blood and iron...and also handy Latin banishing/binding phrases.

5.) Copious use of sarcasm and the best one-liners. He always makes me laugh and it's no secret, I love a man who can make me laugh.

6.) His emotional depth. Underneath that bad boy, who gives a fuck exterior is a guy who feels things deeply even though ninety percent of the time he's trying to hide it. For some reason, I find that attractive. I'm not sure, but that may make me somewhat dysfunctional.

7.) He personifies the word hero. This is a guy that never gives up - ever. Even in the face of overwhelming odds...like say, a war between Heaven and Hell, he keeps fighting even though he's emotionally and physically exhausted.

8.) I love his laugh and his sense of playfulness.

9.) Love that adorable smile.

10.) Yes, at the risk of objectifying, this guy is just hot. Typically not my type, but yeah, he totally does it for me.

Stuff I've been doing

I'm pleased to report I'm no longer the Plague Maiden - hooray for Gypsy Cold Care Tea and copious doses of echinacea, goldneseal, garlic, zinc and vitamin C! In fact, I felt so much better I went to a drum circle Friday night with my friend Jen, because yes, I am that just that crunchy granola. But it was a beautiful night with a full moon and a bonfire and about three hours of drumming - absolutely fantastic.

I also watched all of season four of Supernatural this weekend. Yes indeed...22 episodes of Sam and Dean demony goodness. (Thank you Brynn for lending me the entire season!) Season five starts this week, so I'm a happy kid.

Today was one of those crazy busy days - I had to get the jewelry for one of my piercings fixed (I swear if it didn't look so cute, I'd take it out - it's really pissing me off lately), get my son's birthday present and go to the IRS. It's a long and boring story, but due to never receiving a 1099 form, we owed the government some money. I didn't think there would be weirdness. I figured, I'd walk in hand someone my check get a receipt and leave. That's not quite how it went down.

Me: Hi. I'd like to pay my bill.
IRS Dude: Are you making a payment.
Me: Well...yeah, but I'm paying it in full.
IRS Dude: Really?
Me: Yepper.
IRS Dude: Cash, check or charge?
Me: Check.
IRS Dude: Take a number and wait to see your specialist.
Me: Wait...I have a specialist?
IRS Dude: Yes. The check specialist.
Me: Okaaay.

So I plop myself in a chair in front of the digital readout and wait. And wait. And wait some more. I wait for almost a half an hour listening to the other people talking to their specialists - one guy was trying to convince his specialist that his ex-wife was completely evil and the other specialist was discussing her dog's behavior problem with her client. So I wander back to the guy at the front desk who hurriedly closes out a game of Solitaire.

Me: So...how long does this usually take?
IRS Dude: You should sit tight...it's gonna be a while.
Me: Well, I have to go pick up my kids from school.
IRS Dude: What time?
Me: 2:30
IRS Dude: Hmmm...that's gonna be a problem.
Me: All I need to do is drop off my check and get a receipt. Is there someone else I can drop it off to?
IRS Dude: Don't you want to argue?
Me: Ummm...noooooo. I just want to make a payment.
IRS Dude: Right. But don't you want to dispute it?
Me: Mostly I just want to pay it and leave.
IRS Dude: So you don't want to argue about it at all?
Me: Not even a little.
IRS Dude: So you're admitting that you owe the money...and you don't want to argue.
Me: Right. I don't want to argue. (I'm beginning to think he's trying to pick a fight at this point.)
IRS Dude: Huh. Well okay. I don't usually take payments, but I guess I can do it if you don't want to argue about it.

Nice enough guy, but by far, one of the weirdest conversations I've had in quite some time. Had it gone on much longer I think we actually would have argued over weather or not I wanted to argue. I'm sure this sort of thing happens to other people too, but most of the time it feels like it's just me.

Wah

I'm feeling a bit whiny today. I had an appointment to take the kittens to the vet for their shots and I noticed that my cat Rowan's mouth looked funky so I took him with me. Turns out he has mouth cancer. He had to stay overnight at the vet's and have his tooth pulled and the area around it cauterized in hopes of getting all the bad cells out. He also had a cyst removed from the back of his head. So now he has half his head and heck shaved with a three inch long incision, and honestly, the poor baby looks like Franken-cat. The vet was pretty sure he got everything, now we just need to wait and see how he does. Poor little Franken-kitty. :(

Also, I have a crappy chest cold. I'm hoping it goes the hell away soon. With school starting next week and the return of the 5am wake up time, I'm really not up for feeling like crap and waking up at the butt-crack of dawn.

On the plus side, season four of Supernatural is finally out! And really, if I'm gonna lay around the house being sick, I might has well watch Dean and Sam while I do it.

Also, in news of the ridiculously cute, Willow, my little runtling kitten, rides around on my shoulder like a parrot. It's freaking adorable.
